Separation Of Salt And Sand By Filtration - 1317 Words
Separation Of Salt and Sand By Filtration Nikki Plack 10-13-15 pd.11 Abstract It is hypothesized that using filtration and evaporation, the correct mass percent of a sand/salt mixture can be determined. Introduction Matter can be classified into two categories, a pure substance or a mixture. Then pure substances and mixtures can be broken down into more specific classifications. If matter is classified as a mixture then that means that it is made up of 2 or more compounds physically joined together. The physical change in a mixture denotes that the chemical identity was not changed. An example of this would be an ice cube melting into water. If matter is classified as a pure substance it has 2 or more elements chemically joined together creating only 1 type of atom or molecule. For example Cu only contains copper atoms. The proportions of a mixture can vary like a 14 karat gold ring, it is made up of 58.3% gold and 41.7% zinc and silver . These variables can change, for example if the gold were to made stronger the percentage of the zinc and silver would become higher and the percentage of the gold lower. Compared to a pure substance where the proportions will constantly be the sam e, such as CO2 , it will always contain one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms, a 1:2 ratio. A pure substance has a set of properties that are always the same regardless of where they came from. There are 2 types of mixtures, a heterogeneous mixture and aShow MoreRelatedSeparation of a Mixture of Solids1522 Words à |à 7 PagesPURPOSE The purpose of this experiment is to become familiar with the separation of mixtures of solid and learn separation techniques based on the chemical properties of a substance. PROCEDURES 1. Separating out the Iron a. Use your digital scale to determine the mass of your weighing dish. b. Empty the entire mixture of solids from the plastic bag into the weighing dish and determine the gross mass of the total mixture and weighing dish. Compute the net mass of the mixture: this is equalRead MoreQuantitative Separation Techniques of a Mixture of C10H8, Nacl and Sio21688 Words à |à 7 PagesResolving and Determining the Percentages of Naphthalene, NaCl and SiO2 in a Mixture with the use of Separation Techniques Castro, Sarleen G.* Cid, John Emmanuel V., Clemente, Christian Joy G. Group 5, 1CHEM, Department of Chemistry, College of Science, University of Santo Tomas, Espaà ±a, Manila, 1015 August 24, 2012 Abstract A mixture can be homogenous or heterogenous, depending if the mixture has been uniform throughout the mixture or not. One of the objectives is to separate C10H8, NaCl andRead MoreChemical Mixture, Using Filtration And Evaporation1630 Words à |à 7 Pagesmixture, using filtration and evaporation. In this lab, a homogeneous mixture will be created, along with a heterogeneous mixture. The two mixtures will be mixed together, yet separated. Common substances will be mixed and then separated using two of the techniques already listed; filtration and evaporation. Theory If the salt, sand, and water mixture is separated successfully through filtration and evaporation, then the percent recovery of the salt and sand will be 100%. Salt, sand, and water areRead MoreLiquid And Solid Substances Into Pure Forms1098 Words à |à 5 Pagesto be able to separate the substances into pure forms. Sea salt is a good example of a pure form that we use in daily life that can be separated from a solution. A mixture is two or more substances that are not chemically bound together. You are able to separate the components of a mixture if you take advantage of the different physical properties. Sand is a solid substance because it is insoluble (does not dissolve) in water, whereas salt is soluble (dissolves) in water and becomes a solution. In order to do this, a ring stand must be set up with an iron ring and a glass funnel. Take a piece of filter paper and fold it as demonstrated by Mrs. Montoney, and place it in the funnel. 8. Place a 250mL beaker under the funnel for the filtered water. 9. Put the remaining mixture in the funnel. 10. Pour some water in a beaker, record the amount of water and pour it in the funnel. A mixture that has a uniform composition and uniform properties throughout it is known as a homogeneous mixture. One example of a homogeneous mixture is air. Air is a homogeneous mixture of gases. Another example of a homogeneous mixture can be seen when you mix a spoonful of table salt or sugar into a glass of water because either the sugar or salt dissolvesRead MoreSeparation Of A Mixture Lab1172 Words à |à 5 PagesSeparation of a Mixture Purpose/Introduction The purpose of this separation of a mixture lab is to give students the challenge of figuring out how to separate a provided mixture, and following through with their procedure.
